The Federation Internationale de I'Automobile decided to create a new World Championship for drivers, similar to the European championship of the 1930s and the motorcycle championship of 1949. Motor Racing was getting back to normal after the turmoil of war and the new formula was made up of the cars that were available. This meant the basic pre-war designs of 1.5 litre supercharged or blown engines (voiturette cars) and the 4.5 litre unblown cars, formed a parallel and equivalent formula. Alfa Romeo had resumed racing after a year off and were firm favourites.
