Модели болидов - Williams (Great Britain)Principal: Frank Williams.Base: Reading, Berkshire/Didcot, Oxfordshire (1976)/Grove, Wantage, Oxfordshire (1996). Founded: 1968. Frank Williams, one time racer and racing car dealer, took the step up to Formula 1 with his good friend Piers Courage. Racing a Brabham very successfully in 1969 turned to disaster when Piers perished in a de Tomaso car the Following year. The team struggled on using March chassis, until the finance was available for their own car. The first true Williams appeared in 1972 and was known as a Politoys in deference to the sponsors. Future cars would follow this trend as with the Iso-Marlboro the following year. After the 1976 season when they were called Wolf Williams, Frank split from Walter Wolf and virtually started again. Moving from the Reading base, a new factory was found and Williams Grand Prix Engineering came into being. After a first season with the March chassis once again, the team has never looked back with the Patrick Head designed cars winning driver and constructor championship on a regular basis. The team battled on from major setback of Frank Williams being paralysed in a road accident near the Paul Ricard circuit in March 1986. The combination of Renault engines and Adrian Newey''s design expertise made the 90''s cars virtually unstoppable although this partnership concluded at the end of 1997. Damon Hill has become the fourth World Champion to vacate the number one seat in the wake of Prost, Mansell and Piquet. After a lean spell BMW forget a strong partnership with the team in 2000 which brought wins but no championships. The engine partership dissolved in 2005 resulting in Williams reuniting with Cosworth for the immediate future. (Grand Prix Data Book 2005) |
