Toyota finally made the top step of motor after many years in lower formulae and success in rally. Swedish rally star of the 1970s, Ove Andersson was placed in charge of this new operation, based in Cologne, where both chassis and engine are produced. After a full year of testing with initial drivers Mika Salo and Allan McNish, the team did very well to score points first time out, but found the rest of their debut year as hard as they anticipated. With an extensive budget the team have changed drivers, designers and team leaders but success still seems out of reach.
