Sauber (Switzerland) 1993-2005

Principal: Peter Sauber.
Base: Hinwil, nr Zurich.
Founded: 1970.
Former racer, Peter Sauber built his first car in 1970 and continued with sports cars, achieving many successes including Le Mans and Sportscar World Championships in 1989-90. Peter Sauber moved from Beetle tuning to building two-seater open sportcars, beginning with C1. He has used the first initial of his wife''s name Christiane to name all of his cars, a tribute to her patience in accepting her husband''s frequent absences from home. Sauber helped bring Mercedes back to front line motorsport with the C8 sports car in 1984 although their relationship finished at the end of the 1994 season. A Ford works deal was lost to the new Stewart Grand Prix operation and the team went on to use re-badged Ferrari engines under the name of their sponsor Petronas. In August 2005 BMW announced their split with Williams and their purchase of the Sauber operation in its entirety.
