Renault began manufacturing racing cars back in 1899 and went on to win the first ever Grand Prix in 1906. After establishing itself as France''s leading motor manufacturer a sporting division was created for sports car racing with the Alpine-Renault. After Formula 2 success Renault went on to introduce one of the major Formula 1 innovations - the turbo engine, based on a Renault-Gordini design. Following their failure to win the World Championship, after coming so close, the company concentrated on engine supply which came to fruition with the Williams partnership of the 1990s. In 2000, Renault bought the Benetton team and from the 2002 season ran under their own name once again. Under the guidance of Flavio Briatore, the team returned to the winner''s circle in 2003 and finally clinched both titles in 2005. (Grand Prix Data Book) |
