Ligier, latterly Prost /1997 to 2001/ (France) 1976-2001

Principal: Guy Ligier.
Base: Abrest-Vichy/ Magny-Cours (1989).
Founded:1969.
Successful businessman and sportsman, Guy Ligier initially built electric road cars until the JS3 became the first Ligie racing car in 1971. The model number JS is used in memory of Guy Ligier''s good griend Jo Schlesser. The company was taken over by Cyril de Rouvre in 1993 but after his arrest. Benetton''s Flavio Briatore took control during 1994, finally buying out Guy Ligier''s remaining 15% stake in August 1996. Alain Prost took over the team in its entirity from the 1997 season and with no objections from his rival teams, renamed this very French operation. Within weeks of the opening race of 2002, it was announced that the long battle against bankruptcy had failed.
