Minardi (Italy)Principal: Giancarlo Minardi / Gabriele Rumi / Paul Stoddart.Base: Faenza, Ravenna. Founded: 1972. Based near his FIAT dealership, Minardi entered Italian Formula 3 and Formula 2, building his first Formula 2 car in 1980. Entering with the Carlo Chiti Motori Moderni engine, the team found Formula 1 a struggle. Minardi persevered with very few highs, before merging with Scuderia Italia for the 1994 season. Lucchini reduced his involvement and at the end of 1997 Gabriele Rumi beacme part of an alliance in acquiring am majority stake in the team. In 1998, Gabriele Rumi became a sole majority shareholder but sold out towards the end of the 2000 season to Australian businessman Paul Stoddart, who set up a British base Ledbury. The team may have won many fans over the years but success on the track has continued to elude this popular outfit. The team finally bowed to financial pressure and sold out to Red Bull in September 2005, becoming their junior team Squadra Toro Rosso. (Grand Prix Data Book) |
