Honda 1964-1968 (Japan)Principal: Soichiro Honda.Base: Tokyo (European Base: Amsterdam/ Slough). Founded: 1948. Honda became world leaders in motorcycle production and racing and by 1962 their attention had turned to cars. A low profile entrance was arranged with engineer Yoshio Nakamura and a new base in Amsterdam. From 1967, John Surtees assumed responsibility for the racing side and moved the team base to Slough, enlisting the help of Lola''s Eric Broadley. The new RA300 (dubbed Hondola) won first time out, but tragedy struck the following year when Jo Schlesser was killed in the air-cooled V8 model. Honda''s first Formula 1 entry came to a sad end but it would return in glory during the 80s, supplying engines in the turbo years. At the end of 2004 Honda bought a larger share of the BAR team with a possible takeover in coming years. (Grand Prix Data Book 2005) |
