De Tomaso Automobili began in October 1959 building Formula Junior and Formula 2 cars at its Modena base. Argentinian racing driver, Alessandro de Tomaso commissioned Gianpaolo Dallara to build an F2 design in 1969 which formed the basis of the Frank Williams entered Formula 1 car the following year. The company went on to produce exotic Ford engined road cars, before ammalgamating with Maserati.
