Cooper (Great Britain) 1950, 1952-1969

Principal: Charles & John Cooper.
Base: Surbiton/ Byfleet, Surrey.
Founded: 1946.
In the immediate post war years, Charles Cooper and his son John were suppoters of the burgeoning Formula 3 500cc racing. They built small rear-engined cars (one of which appeared at Monaco in 1950), that set a trend for the Formula 2 models of the late fifties, although the first Formula 2 Coopers were conventional front-engined cars. Their pinnacle came with back to back championships in 1959-60. Charles died in 1964 and with John suffering from the effects of a serious road accident, the team was sold to the Chipstead Group and later relocated to Canada Road, Byfleet. In the final years Cooper reintroduced the V12 Maserati engine but the writing was on the wall and they closed soon after.
