Toleman, Benetton (Great Britain/ Italy)Principal: Ted Toleman/ Alessandro Benetton.Base: Witney, Oxfordshire/ Enstone, Oxfordshire (1993). Founded: 1970. Ted Toleman and his company took part in British club motorsport, building their first car for Formula 2 in 1980 and entering the big time in the following year. In 1985, the Whitney based team ran into difficalties and was rescued by Benetton sponsorship which resulted in a full takeover by the Italian company the following season. A succession of team managers has seen Peter Collins, David Paolini and Flavio Briatore take control of the racing operations. In 1993 the team moved to new Oxfordshire premises and became the team to beat, the following year. The combination of Schumacher and intelligent team strategy paid off with both titles in 1995, although they seemed to miss their superstar the following season when the team officially changed their nationality to Italian. The Benetton family sold out to Renault in 2000 and the following season saw the final Benetton chassis using an experimental Renault engine before the team reverted to the famous French marque''s name for the 2002 season.
