Tyrrell (Great Britain) 1970-1998Principal: Ken Tyrrell.Base: Ockham, Woking, Surrey. Founded: 1960. Former wood merchant and one time Formula 3 racer, Ken Tyrrell moved towards team management, first with a Cooper Formula 2 and then with his own team. Successful years with Matra in F2/F3 led to a Grand Prix entry in 1968 with Matra''s first Formula 1 chassis. Reacquainted with Jackie Stewart, the team had two successful years with the Matra-Cosworth DFV combination including a debut World Championship in 1969. With Matra using its own engine, Tyrrell stayed with Ford Cosworth power and needed a new chassis for 1970. The new March organisation became the stop-gap until the first Tyrrell, built in utmost secrecy, was ready to race late that season. The passing years haven''t been kind to the Tyrrell organisation. After such a high flying start, the team''s results declined with its nadir being the disqualification from the World Championship in 1984 for alleged fuel irregularities. Ken Tyrrell sold the team and left before the 1998 season started, although by that time they had been absorbed into the new British American Racing operation. (Grand Prix Data Book 2005) |
