Alfa Romeo 1950-1951, 1979-1985 (Italy)Principals: Alfa Corse, Autodelta & Euroracing.Base: Portello, Milan. Founded: 1918. Societa Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili (ALFA) was formed in 1909. Nicola Romeo later took over the factory and the company finally became known as Alfa Romeo in 1918. From its earliest days, Alfa Romeo has celebrated many years of successful racing - Enzo Ferrari ran the racing team in the 30s. The first championship car began life in 1938 as a Voiturette (Formula 2) and was stored during the war to be developed over the years, to become virtually unbeatable. The team withdrew as the first Grand Prix formula came to the end, and after a period of engine supply returned as a fully fledged team in the late 70s. Its racing concern passed from Carlo Chiti''s Autodelta operation to Paolo Pavanello''s Euroracing team in 1983, before the now FIAT owned group finally wound down its Formula 1 activity.
